Solar energy in Armenia. Discover how solar panels can save you money and save the environment.
1. Advantages of solar energy for households in Armenia
Solar energy in Armenia has started to develop very quickly in the last 15 years. The Republic of Armenia may not seem like a rich country in terms of energy resources, but it is one of the richest in the region in terms of sun, sunny days throughout the year, and solar energy. Solar energy is just beginning to gain momentum and is helping Armenia move towards a greener future and preserve nature with steady steps. The correct use of solar energy will undoubtedly make it possible to achieve energy independence gradually but in a definite time frame and save quite a lot of money in the case of house utility bills.
2. Why choose solar energy?
Almost every day many of us hear different stories about switching to solar energy and therefore saving. Some jump right into solar power and express satisfaction, while others are still skeptical and continue to hesitate considering the move risky. But solar energy is one of the safest and cleanest sources of environmentally green energy. Compared to hydrogen energy, solar energy has some advantages that are hard to disagree with.
First of all, solar energy can be said to be inexhaustible, it is a daily inexhaustible resource that is not only a source of energy on planet Earth, but also an irreplaceable phenomenon for life – trees, plants, animals, and the human world, without which it would be impossible to live.
Since Armenia is a country rich in sunshine, it would be absurd to miss this opportunity. Why wait when you can install solar panels right now, buy a solar plant at very affordable prices, and enjoy solar energy for decades for free?
Solar energy provides energy independence, and savings, is completely safe, and most importantly, keeps the living environment clean and green for our future generations.
3. How do solar panels work?
The operation of solar panels is based on the photoelectric effect:
- The flow of photons hits the total surface of the solar panels;
- Solar energy penetrates the silicon layer.
- The so-called p/n conductivity occurs in the working layer of solar cells, resulting in photons pushing free electrons out of semiconductor atoms.
- Their flow is a direct electric current that is directed to the inverter;
The main purpose of the inverter is to convert alternating current into direct current, which will be used by the consumer later and will have great savings.
Solar panels
Each solar panel is a collection of semiconductor cells stacked on a solid aluminum base. The upper part of the panels is covered with solid and transparent glass, and the electric direct current is transmitted by conductive layers.
In most cases, the edges of the solar panel surface are protected by a strong and rust-proof aluminum frame, but some panels are made without an aluminum protective frame, giving the solar panel an aesthetic, beautiful look. Solar panels can also be divided into groups that are connected in one of three ways:
4. Use of solar energy
Solar energy – the light and heat radiated from the sun, which is used by some constantly developing technologies, such as solar heating, photovoltaics, solar architecture, and artificial photosynthesis, which is used almost everywhere.
The solar energy potential of the Republic of Armenia is very large and the state’s overarching goal should be gradual energy independence. The main sources of energy in RA are still the Nuclear Power Plant, HPPs, and many CHPs.
5. Installation of solar panels and maintenance
A solar plant is a group of panels connected to absorb the sun’s rays and use an inverter to convert them into electricity for your home.
The installation of solar panels has many features: they can be installed on the ground or on the house, and in urban conditions, on balconies and walls. All options have advantages and disadvantages, and the choice is individual. each type of solar plant is distinguished by both general and special installation features.
In order to install solar panels, it is necessary to fix the solar panels on the roof or where they are to be installed, combine them with each other, and connect them to the converter (inverter); equipment, and safety savings.
There are quite high requirements for solar panels and lighting. Therefore, the correct installation of the solar system is the most important factor during the design of the solar photovoltaic plant.

7. Options for acquiring a solar plant with government assistance
There are two payment options for acquiring a solar power plant:
a. Cash
b. Credit
The cash option is the most cost-effective, allowing you to pay the full price of your solar plant upfront without incurring any additional interest. On the other hand, the credit option is convenient for those who prefer a long-term loan. It involves monthly payments, which vary based on the loan size of your solar plant and the scheduled repayments.
Buy a solar plant on credit if you can benefit from a subsidy program developed by the government.
- 0-1% rate in border settlements,
- 2-3% rate in villages,
- 3-4% rate in regional communities,
- 5-6% rate in Yerevan
When issuing these types of credits, financial organizations consider your monthly income, personal credit history, personal ID, and actual building permit information. Subsidized credits offer an effective annual interest rate ranging from 0% to 6%, depending on the region where you reside.
Such a type of subsidized credits means repayment of only a certain interest rate, i.e. 0-6%.

8. Savings due to solar energy
Before installing your solar panels, you need to understand how much they will cost, whether the price is reasonable and logical, and how long the payback will be. Payback means how many years after its full operation your plant will pay back the full purchase price.
