Solar batteries will soon become safe of destructive cosmic radiation. They will be made from the new Russian organometallic material. Such energy sources can be installed both on near-Earth satellites or stations and on ships designed for expeditions to the Moon or Mars. As a result, the equipment will become lighter and there will be free space for additional cargo. Silicon solar cells have been used in astronautics since its inception, and they still have not ceded their place to more advanced organic samples.
Although modern options are capable of producing twice as much energy with the same surface area. This is primarily due to the low resistance of organics to the effects of cosmic radiation, which leads to the rapid destruction of elements in space. This problem was solved by Russian scientists who presented batteries that are not afraid of radiation.
– As a result of the experiments, it was proved that under the influence of a particle flow only a small part of the atoms of a substance changes its location in a material. And this does not significantly affect its characteristics. In inorganic samples, the displacement of the same number of atoms significantly changes their semiconductor characteristics.
Another advantage of organometallic solar cells is their susceptibility to a wider range of radiation, which includes visible infrared light, as well as ultraviolet light. As a result, this will allow them to more efficiently convert the energy of the sun into electricity. Ready products from new materials will be affordable since lanthanide-based substances are already widely used in industry – in particular, they are used to make elements for LED screens of modern TVs.
According to experts, such materials can be used both on artificial Earth satellites and in power supply systems for new space technology intended for long-distance flights (in particular, to Mars). It will experience more exposure to cosmic particles than low-orbit spacecraft.
Currently, the developers have already created four prototypes of perspective solar cells. They are being tested, according to the results of which conclusions will be drawn about the possibility of using such materials in space technology.
Development prospects are not limited only to spacecraft – on its basis it is planned to assemble a device for the direct conversion of ionizing radiation into electricity, bypassing the stage of heating the coolant. Due to this, new-generation nuclear power plants can be created.
